Sick husband, hyper kids, unpacking, OH MY!

Things are settling wonderfully 'round here. Kind of. Mike was out of commission for almost a week and I have been pretty much on my own with unpacking, cleaning and managing the boys who are just a tad excited about a bigger house with a better backyard. And when I say "a tad" I really mean that screams of joy can be heard echoing and it's not uncommon to hear/feel a thud or two with some enthusiastic hopping on the second floor.

And it took us a week to get internet.... I'm so out of the loop.

But I am still over the moon THRILLED about owning our own home. I am close to bursting with joy about it... and I haven't even cracked open a paint can yet! Pictures will follow when that happens (just waiting on the check...). I may snap a few sneak peeks later... when I find the camera...

I'm just taking a short break from unpacking our "desk box" while I had all three kids entertained (Monster House movie). Back to work! Have a safe and happy Independence Day weekend!

How's the air up there?

Hello World.

I'm hanging in there. I'm feeling better although tired. Between being sick and being slightly depressed about my husband's absence, my energy level has plummeted.  As a result, the house has exploded. Not pleasant. I was planning on cleaning up today but after our very stresful morning I'm just not feeling it.

Today my 5 year old has his head particularly far up in the clouds. He's just completely in his own world and I have saved him from bodily harm TWICE today. Once with a car in the grocery store parking lot and another with a swinging preteen at the park, with the help of the preteens friend. There has also been a lot of wandering off, not really listening, and other such normal 5 year old behaviors. Added to the grumpiness of the 3 year old, yeeeeeeah.

I'm going to chillax for this afternoon and maybe try to tackle cleaning... later. For now, it's "Desparate Landscapes" on Hulu. :)

At Home Gender Test?

My daily sweep of CNN.com popped up an interesting article about an over-the-counter gender prediction test. For $34.95, you can have a 78-80% accurate answer to whether you need to pick a boy or a girl name as early as 10 weeks after conception.

IntelliGender, creator of the "Boy or Girl Gender Prediction Test," says scientists isolated certain hormones that when combined with a "proprietary mix of chemicals" react differently if a woman is carrying a boy or a girl. It claims that within 10 minutes of taking the urine test, a woman will be able to tell her baby's gender. The specimen will turn green if it's a boy, and orange if it's a girl.

Many parents, myself included, are/were counting the days until that big 20 week ultrasound to find out what color to paint the nursery. The company does say not to do anything drastic until the results are confirmed by a doctor but you gotta admit knowing 10 weeks sooner is tempting.

Some worry that there is a darker side to it. Parents-to-be, upon finding out they are not getting the gender of their choice, may decide to abort and try again. The makers of the gender prediction test say they "categorically disagree" with the idea their test may prompt an increase in sex-selection abortions. The company won't sell to India or China because of national bias for males.

I'm done having babies but I'm unsure if I would use this myself if I wasn't. As impatient as I may be, being able to SEE my baby (via ultrasound) and hear "It's a boy/girl" is much more exciting than watching my pee change color in a cup. With my last baby we even considered waiting until the birth for the ultimate surprise. Sometimes waiting is worth it.

What do you think about this? Would you use it?

Out of Order

Hey y'all! How are you? I wanted to get out a quick update, especially after my not so cheery birthday post. (You can read about my birthday here.)

My darlin' husband is gone for 2 weeks with the National Guard. I'm unhappy and lonely.

I am sick, I first thought it was allergies but this isn't that. I feel like I've been run over by a truck. I think it's borderline sinus infection as well. Daaamnit.

We close on the house on Friday! Whee! Double YAY for getting to see Mike again even though it's only going to be for a couple hours in the truck and signing paperwork before he has to go back.

I am so ready to just move already and get into a new grove. Mike will be back on evening shift, the kids and I will start fresh with homeschooling (we've been on a semi-break for the last month) and we can get settled in making our house a home.

My head is killing me. I want to see if I can get the kids settled down for quiet time and maybe take a nap. Have a fabulous week!

World No Tobacco Day

World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31. The member states of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987. It draws global attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to its negative health effects. The day aims to reduce the 5.4 million yearly deaths from tobacco related health problems.

Once You Start, It's Hard to Stop
Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal.

People start smoking for a variety of different reasons. Some think it looks cool. Others start because their family members or friends smoke. Statistics show that about 9 out of 10 tobacco users start before they're 18 years old. Most adults who started smoking in their teens never expected to become addicted. That's why people say it's just so much easier to not start smoking at all.

How Smoking Affects Your Health
There are no physical reasons to start smoking. The body doesn't need tobacco the way it needs food, water, sleep, and exercise. In fact, many of the chemicals in cigarettes, like nicotine and cyanide, are actually poisons that can kill in high enough doses.

The body is smart. It goes on the defense when it's being poisoned. For this reason, many people find it takes several tries to get started smoking: First-time smokers often feel pain or burning in the throat and lungs, and some people feel sick or even throw up the first few times they try tobacco.

The consequences of this poisoning happen gradually. Over the long term, smoking leads people to develop health problems like heart disease, stroke, emphysema (breakdown of lung tissue), and many types of cancer — including lung, throat, stomach, and bladder cancer. People who smoke also have an increased risk of infections like bronchitis and pneumonia.

These diseases limit a person's ability to be normally active, and they can be fatal. Each time a smoker lights up, that single cigarette takes about 5 to 20 minutes off the person's life.

Smokers not only develop wrinkles and yellow teeth, they also lose bone density, which increases their risk of osteoporosis, a condition that causes older people to become bent over and their bones to break more easily. Smokers also tend to be less active than nonsmokers because smoking affects lung power.

Smoking can also cause fertility problems and can impact sexual health in both men and women. Girls who are on the pill or other hormone-based methods of birth control (like the patch or the ring) increase their risk of serious health problems, such as heart attacks, if they smoke.

The consequences of smoking may seem very far off, but long-term health problems aren't the only hazard of smoking. Nicotine and the other toxins in cigarettes, cigars, and pipes can affect a person's body quickly, which means that teen smokers experience many of these problems:

• Bad skin. Because smoking restricts blood vessels, it can prevent oxygen and nutrients from getting to the skin — which is why smokers often appear pale and unhealthy. An Italian study also linked smoking to an increased risk of getting a type of skin rash called psoriasis.

• Bad breath. Cigarettes leave smokers with a condition called halitosis, or persistent bad breath.

• Bad-smelling clothes and hair. The smell of stale smoke tends to linger — not just on people's clothing, but on their hair, furniture, and cars. And it's often hard to get the smell of smoke out.

• Reduced athletic performance. People who smoke usually can't compete with nonsmoking peers because the physical effects of smoking (like rapid heartbeat, decreased circulation, and shortness of breath) impair sports performance.

• Greater risk of injury and slower healing time. Smoking affects the body's ability to produce collagen, so common sports injuries, such as damage to tendons and ligaments, will heal more slowly in smokers than nonsmokers.

• Increased risk of illness. Studies show that smokers get more colds, flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia than nonsmokers. And people with certain health conditions, like asthma, become more sick if they smoke (and often if they're just around people who smoke). Because teens who smoke as a way to manage weight often light up instead of eating, their bodies lack the nutrients they need to grow, develop, and fight off illness properly.

Kicking Butts and Staying Smoke Free
All forms of tobacco — cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco — are hazardous. It doesn't help to substitute products that seem like they're better for you than regular cigarettes, such as filtered or low-tar cigarettes.

The only thing that really helps a person avoid the problems associated with smoking is staying smoke free. This isn't always easy, especially if everyone around you is smoking and offering you cigarettes. The good news for people who don't smoke or who want to quit is that studies show that the number of teens who smoke has dropped dramatically. Today, about 23% of high school students smoke.

If you do smoke and want to quit, you have lots of information and support available. Different approaches to quitting work for different people. For some, quitting cold turkey is best. Others find that a slower approach is the way to go. Some people find that it helps to go to a support group. These are sometimes sponsored by local hospitals or organizations, the Internet offers a number of good resources to help people quit smoking.

When quitting, it can be helpful to realize that the first few days are the hardest. So don’t give up. Some people find they have a few relapses before they manage to quit for good. Staying smoke free will give you a whole lot more of everything — more energy, better performance, better looks, more money in your pocket, and, in the long run, more life to live!

I know quitting isn't easy, people struggle with it every day. Making a conscious decision to stop is the first step, the longer you smoke the harder it will be to stop. And even after that, not going back to the comforting warmth of a cigarette is insanely difficult. But people have done it, and people are doing it. It is going to be a case of mind over everything else. Focus on the reason you want to stop in the first place, whether it is for your loved ones or for your own health, and always keep that end goal in mind. If you are unable to do it for yourself, do it for them. Please.

Check Me Out and Move Along

Today is our house inspection. Before I fell into oblivion last night, I told Mike that I really really hope that there's nothing big wrong. Minor things I can handle, big not so much. We shall see this afternoon.

We will be there around 2:45, an hour before the inspector says he'll be finished, with my notebook and a measuring tape. We are going to be measuring walls to see how much paint we will need and basically planning the layout of our furniture. And of course we wouldn't pass up the opportunity to be back at our almost ours house. :)

If today goes well, the house will be appraised then it's all paperwork. We are set to close on the 12th. Although it may be the 13th because Mike will be doing his 2 weeks annual training with the Guard and it would be easier for him to leave on the Saturday rather than Friday. We'll see, since he hasn't been able to get ahold of ANYONE in the last week to ask about it. (I have a huge rant about the Guard that I won't get into.)

Either way that is one month from the day we started our loan paperwork until we have the keys to a house. Crazy fast. The seller must be thrilled as well, her house was off the market within 4 days of it being listed. We snatched that up quick.

I will spend 2 weeks packing. Mike will get home on the 20th, go to work with the department on the 21st then our move is set for the 22nd. Mike will have until the 24th off work so that gives us three days to move and settle in. If we are able to get help, I will probably be staying here at the rental with the kids while Mike moves so I can get a head start on cleaning. If we have no help, I'll be driving up on my own after Mike goes back to work.

So we have a plan. Let's hope that is sticks.

And by the way, my birthday is Thursday. :)

Home Sweet Home

I have been MIA I know. This house business has completely taken over my life. I have even taken this last week off homeschooling because I can't get decorating and such off my mind. (Although learning never stops, I'm just not being as formal with a schedule or a plan.)

As for house hunting... after 14 flops, we were feeling a bit discouraged but still optimistic. Last Sunday we had only two houses in Kyle, a town 10 minutes south of Austin, on our list to look at but we went with high hopes that one of them was the one that was just right our for family. After one with great potential but needing major work, we pulled up to....

We walked in and LOVED it. It has the open main floor that we wanted, great looking tile through the living room, kitchen and all the bathrooms, spacious rooms and swoon worthy backyard. We wanted it and we wanted it now! We looked over prices, ran numbers through a mortgage calculator, looked at our budget before we called our realtor and threw over an offer.

After a bit of haggling and a bit of nail biting, an offer has been accepted!  We sign the contract this afternoon to stake our claim and get it off the market.

Let's look at the numbers.

  • We are 1st time homebuyers.
  • This is the 16th house we looked at.
  • It is 2210 square feet, over 600 more square feet than where we are now.
  • It has 3 bedrooms (plus 1 game room) and 2 1/2 bathrooms.
  • There is 1 fireplace in the living room.
  • There are 2 lovely weeping willows and 1 deck in the backyard.
  • This will be our 8th move in the last 6 years.
  • While it is a 28 minute drive to Mike's work, with the easy access to I-35, it is only 5 minutes away from major and still growing retail space including an HEB Plus (Think Super Walmart for y'all not in Texas), Lowe's, Chase (our bank), Kohl's and an in-the-process-of-being-built Super Target to name a few.
  • Both Mike and I are lovin' our 23rd year birthday present!  (Both Mike and I have June birthdays.)
How can you not fall in love with this gorgeous back yard?

You have to wait for inside pictures until the before and after shots. I'm not even going to reveal our plans so it's even more of a surprise! Let's just say that I bought a notebook to completely devote it house stuff - ideas, plans, prices, things Mike will never agree to. Haha!

Tomorrow I will be calling the house inspector to make sure there's nothing sneaky lurking to ruin this house for us. After that it's all paperwork. We are projected to close, barring anything major wrong with the inspection, by June 14th. Yes that is super fast. The owner is heading to Canada soon and we are wanting to rush this as well so we have hit the ground running.

Before anyone asks, yes I did a happy dance, which will be repeated when Mike gets home. I am seriously over the moon about this. I have been waiting for this for 6 years. My head is bursting with ideas. Although I am very much in my own world right now, I hope y'all will forgive me.

Just warning ya now, there is going to be a ton of house related blogs coming soon. :)

And a baby blog is born

A friend and I launched a new blog today - 10 dollar dates. All about dates on a shoestring!

Together we are mashing our date ideas, mine as a SAHM trying to save same money to hers as a recently college grad just venturing out into the world of employment or the lack there of.

We are just getting started so keep checking back as we get the ball rolling. Prepare to be amazed! :)

Putting Down Roots

I know that my blogs lately have been feeling very much like articles from a magazine rather than something from just me. I do apologize for that. Honestly, I've been cheating and cross posting blogs from my Momaroo blog. I'm so bad! I'm a slacker I know.

However, I'm hoping to be back in action. Lately I've been feeling very melancholy - hormones are possibly to blame - but I hope that our new life stage will breathe some fresh air into my blogging. We are house hunting! Homes for Heroes - a program that helps law enforcement, firefighters, EMS and military buy or sell a home - has approved us for a loan and now we just need to find us a house!

I am browsing blogs like This Young House and a recently discovered Bower Power and watching HGTV on Hulu for decorating ideas. I have been looking through paint colors on Behr and designing my dream kitchen from Ikea. But whoa there, I am getting far ahead of myself. Finding a house needs to come first before I can mess with the insides. But still, can't hurt to be mentally prepared. ;)

After 5 1/2 years of marriage and starting sentences with "When we have our own place...", Tornado Chaser is now hunting houses!
